Так выглядит только что открывшийся английский Google eBookStore из России.

French publishers Albin Michel, Flammarion and Gallimard have confirmed they have dropped charges against Google for digitising copyrighted books from their catalogues without prior permission. The three said they had decided to abandon the summons against Google France and Google Inc that they had filed on 6th May and 3rd June in order to “facilitate the resumption of talks between the French publishers association (Syndicat National de l’Edition, SNE) and Google over the digitation of copyrighted books and the search for an amicable solution to the litigation”.

Есть такой отличный писатель, Нил Стивенсон. И есть у него (как бы) исторический роман “Ртуть”. И был такой сайт, где читатели романа совокупно писали комментарии. И я даже этот сайт когда-то видел, и думал - вот крутизна какая - только индекс из нескольких сот вхождений. Но в 2005 году, оказывается, если верить archive.org, сайт романа c красивым названием metaweb.com перешёл к компании, профилем которой стал Semantic Web. А потом компанию купил Google.

The agreement for Google to scan out-of-print French language books for Hachette Livre has been signed, two months later than scheduled. The five-year agreement should have been finalised six months after the memorandum of understanding was signed last November, but it was delayed until last week by technical hitches. The pact confirms Hachette Livre will decide which titles should be scanned and which should be made available as e-books through Google and booksellers or for other commercial purposes, such as print-on-demand, the two companies said in a joint statement.

То есть в замкнутной экосистеме Google. Интересно, насколько состояние Роулинг, и без того немаленькое, обогатится от этой сделки?

Тут тебе и книжки, и видеопрокат, и, понятно, программы. Только музыки не хватает. Книжки, пишут, можно читать прямо тут же. Все радости — пока только для США. Непонятно, как же Google eBooks?

via googleblog.blogspot.com В буридер iriver Story HD ($140 в США) будет устанавливаться программа для доступа к Google eBooks (подключение к сети через WiFi). Это, конечно, не альтернатива Kindle. Но решение Google не сбрасывать со счетов букридеры оч. правильное. Для России, конечно, не акутально, поскольку Google eBooks здесь работает весьма ограничено, но интересная тенденция.
