Developed by a European consortium coordinated by the Italian Publishers Association (AIE), ARROW — Accessible Registries of Rights Information and Orphan Works — is a system to help libraries with the identification of rights status and rightsholders in digital library programs. ARROW is based on a pro-active search of rightsholders for works eligible for inclusion in any digitization program, and indirectly is a tool for the identification of so-called “orphan works.

Scribd, is less than 3 years old, hosts over 10 million digital documents which it defines as ‘books’ if they run to more than 100 pages. So we even have some issues in defining a book! It now claims some 2 million visitors a day and what it sees as the number one position. Obviously it has been seen by many as an attractive channel and some 150 publishers have joined Scribd and now Scribd has also moved into newsprint and is become the home for journalists to post their documents.

It turns out that Apple actually has licensed the technology from Lodsys for its own uses—but the license does not transfer to developers using it, who have to make their own licensing arrangements. Lodsys wants a bit over half a percent of any in-app purchase revenue until the patent expires, which isn’t really large by itself but could represent only a drop in the bucket. via teleread.com

Google’s executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, warned on Wednesday that government plans to block access to illicit filesharing websites could set a “disastrous precedent” for freedom of speech. Speaking to journalists after his keynote speech at Google’s Big Tent conference in London, Schmidt said the online search giant would challenge attempts to restrict access to the Pirate Bay and other so-called “cyberlocker” sites that encourage illegal downloading – part of government plans to fight online piracy through controversial measures included in the Digital Economy Act.

The commotion surrounding copyright troll Righthaven’s lawsuits just keeps getting better. One of the defendants, news aggregator Buzzfeed.com, has filed a class-action counterclaim against the company on behalf of all sites sued by Righthaven, alleging Righthaven is abusing legal process, does not actually own the copyrights it is claiming, and is suing in bad faith by not sending a takedown notice first or investigating if the use might be a fair use.

Estimates of the scale of illegal digital downloads in the UK ranges between 13 per cent and 65 per cent in two studies published last year. A detailed survey of UK and international data finds that very little of it is supported by transparent research criteria. Meanwhile sales and profitability levels in most creative business sectors appear to be holding up reasonably well. We conclude that many creative businesses are experiencing turbulence from digital copyright infringement, but that at the level of the whole economy, measurable impacts are not as stark as is sometimes suggested.
