Apple said Tuesday that it was set to make a major push into illustrated books on Wednesday, introducing more than 100 titles to its iBookstore, an assortment of children’s books, photography books and cookbooks. Some of the most popular children’s picture books of all time will be available, including some of the “Olivia” picture books, published by Simon & Schuster. Other titles are “Ad Hoc at Home,” a lavish cookbook by the chef Thomas Keller; “Beginnings,” by the photographer Anne Geddes; and “In the National Parks,” a photograph collection by Ansel Adams.

On Thursday, the Toronto-based e-publishing startup will launch Reading Life, a new e-reading iPad application that integrates with the company’s digital bookstore designed to bring social-networking capabilities to the world of electronic books, in a sort of Book Club 2.0. Through the opt-in service, Kobo users will be able to directly share with their friends what books they’re reading and share favourite passages through Facebook, keep tabs on their reading history through a comprehensive statistics tracker and earn badges and rewards for reading in a manner reminiscent of social check in services like Foursquare and Gowalla.

So, for many delegates if there was one presentation that really stood out at FutureBook 2010 it was when Max Whitby, founder and CEO of Touch Press, spoke about The Elements iPad app. Not only was the project a unique idea (at the time) with an amusing story attached to it (after all — publishers and booksellers like stories), he revealed Touch Press have so far sold over 150,000 units at $14 each — with Touch Press receiving a 70% share of those sales.
