The Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Aalto University and the National Engineering Center of Digital Television (NERC-DTV) plan to make a low-power, reception only device based on an E-ink screen. The screen and general hardware design are expected to cheap and require minimal power, and that should make it possible to power the e-reader completely from a solar panel.

French publishers Albin Michel, Flammarion and Gallimard have confirmed they have dropped charges against Google for digitising copyrighted books from their catalogues without prior permission.
The three said they had decided to abandon the summons against Google France and Google Inc that they had filed on 6th May and 3rd June in order to “facilitate the resumption of talks between the French publishers association (Syndicat National de l’Edition, SNE) and Google over the digitation of copyrighted books and the search for an amicable solution to the litigation”.
Worldwide media tablet shipments rose by 88.9% on a sequential basis and 303.8% year over year in the second calendar quarter of 2011 (2Q11) to 13.6 million units, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker. Based on this strong performance in the second quarter, and an improved outlook for the second half of the year, IDC raised its shipment forecast for 2011 to 62.

Other services that take a similar approach include Scribd, which began as a simple web-hosting service for documents but has expanded to try to appeal to writers and publishers. And much like other web services that rely on “user-generated content” — including YouTube — both Scribd and Wattpad have been criticized in the past for hosting copyrighted content that has been uploaded by users who don’t own the rights (Wattpad now has a system in place that allows authors and rightsholders to have content removed from the service).
On iBookstore, you can now offer an Enhanced version of your book. Include things like video and audio to enhance the experience. Great for topics like cooking, exercise, music, film, DIY and more. Add video that shows how something is done or add an audio file that gives readers more information.

I foresee three things coming from this:
Whether they buy into Amazon’s proposal or not, publishers will be spurred to take a harder look at their existing catalogs and figure out how they can make them available digitally. This could be through sales or subscription, through Amazon or some other portal. Whether it can convince major publishers on the right price or not, Amazon will find some way to make inexpensive, high-quality reading content available for free to every Amazon Prime subscriber and everyone who buys one of its new tablets.
